What I Believe...
I am often amazed by the human mind and spirit – the extent
to which they remain resilient, hopeful and the way they take on
life’s difficulties. I believe it is our survival instinct
and our irrepressible belief that things can be better and that
we can find the power within to make it so.
I believe that a person with increased awareness about oneself
and others, and an appreciation of the interplay of forces within
relationships, enhance the chances of happiness and of forging the
relationships we need. It is a noble and daunting adventure and
one that we are meant to embark upon!
My Professional Experience...
I practice psychotherapy alongside my wife Lori. We have been together
as therapists and educators since 1989. We have developed the following
businesses:
- Couple to Couple® Coaching
- Mars & Venus Counseling Center
- Hollander Counseling Associates
- Mediation with Heart®
- Separation with Heart®
Our offices are located in Owings Mills and Westminster, Maryland,
and we are the first clinicians to open a Mars & Venus
Counseling Center in the greater Baltimore area.
We were personally trained by Dr. John Gray, author of Men
Are from Mars, Women Are from Venus, and have successfully
used his approach throughout our careers as therapists and educators.
Our focus takes into account gender differences and the power inherent
in relationships to transform lives.
I am also the director of Mediation with Heart®,
where I practice Divorce Mediation. My wife, Lori and I realized
that after a divorce, parents needed support to “live the
agreement.” Working together as parents after a separation/divorce
is often very difficult. In response we developed Separation
with Heart®, where we, as a team, help couples learn
how to “Co-Parent.”
As both a therapist and lawyer, I have developed a unique approach
to the mediation process by drawing from both my legal and therapeutic
expertise. My legal background provides for a broad recognition
and appreciation of the legal issues at hand, and my training as
a therapist and counselor enables me to guide the couple through
difficult feelings and “emotional blocks” which often
complicate and belabor the process of separation and divorce.
Our Newest Program...
Couple to Couple® Coaching
was created by Lori and me after working with many couples independently
throughout our careers. We discovered that when we both were present
during the sessions and both working together with a couple, our
understanding of precisely what was unfolding before us grew exponentially.
Viewing the multiple levels of interaction and communication with
4 eyes rather than 2, and from both the male and female perspective,
gave us a real advantage over conventional practice.
In addition, conferring afterwards and throughout the week with
each other, further enhanced the power of our understanding and
our selection of strategic proactive interventions. Being there
with the couple in session and experiencing the couple together
and having the power of “thought and insight times 2”
is an extremely productive environment.
The combined synergy of two couples working together in such a
fashion is transformative, bringing forth a deeper and more profound
understanding of where a relationship is getting stuck, and how
best to move it to a new level of awareness and functioning. It
has been a program that we find very exciting and one that possesses
the power to elevate the relationship to where it rightfully deserves
to be.
