November 18, 2009: The Gratitude Effect

Want to feel more joy in your relationship and in your life? There is one simple way to do this - Express gratitude. Studies have consistently shown that people who regularly express gratitude feel less stressed, are more satisfied with their lives, have greater energy, optimism, enthusiasm and attentiveness. When we consciously place our focus on the positive in our relationship and connect with others around us on a regular basis, we set the stage for a happier, more joyful life.

Buddha says: “Let us rise up and be thankful, for if we didn't learn a lot today, at least we learned a little, and if we didn't learn a little, at least we didn't get sick, and if we got sick, at least we didn't die; so, let us all be thankful.”

There is always something to be thankful for even in the worst of times. For one week, focus on expressing your gratefulness to your partner daily. Everywhere you go, to the grocery store, the gas station, the office, express thankfulness. At the end of the week, ask yourself how you felt this week. Chances are it will have been a good week, no matter what happened.

Being thankful regularly will improve your relationships, your feelings of connection and your overall level of happiness. It’s only takes a minute and it’s free.

Make gratitude an everyday habit.
